Do you own or rent a water dispenser? If you do then great but beware of the pitfalls.
Water Dispenser – Your Best Friend
Your water dispenser can be the best thing for you and your family and here are just a few of the reasons why this is the case.
Perhaps the first and foremost is the fact that water will keep your body hydrated – so important for healthy living. Whether you drink your water at room temperature, hot with noodles, tea, coffee, chocolate etc or cold all will achieve the outcome of keeping your body hydrated. There is thought to be a lot of benefit in drinking water at room temperature or even warm to hot. Personally, I prefer drinking cold water and lots of it especially here in the Philippines and at this time of the year when things really heat up.
A hot and cold water dispenser is just so convenient. It sits there always ready to provide you and the family either hot or cold water. This encourages the consumption of water and makes it that much easier to get our recommended 8 glasses of water per day consumed.
For me, having cold water always there ready to drink means I am consuming more.
A water dispenser is very cost effective. Rather than purchase 500ml, 1 litre or 6 litre bottles of labelled water you can purchase the large 5 gallon round bottles from a local supplier at a greatly discount price per litre. You just need to be careful your supplier is meeting all the government requirements for filtering water otherwise you might be putting yourself and your family at risk.
Putting the dispenser in a prominent position is the best thing you can do. By having your dispenser out in the open and in everyone’s view you are encouraging the consumption of water.
In my house I have the water dispenser sitting prominently in the open lounge room and not far from the TV. Everyone must walk past it when entering and leaving and I leave disposable cups on a table next to it. This encourages everyone to drink more. We choose to drink Alkaline water and I genuinely believe it helps in keeping my family and workers not only hydrated, but healthy and less likely to get sick.
Water Dispenser – Your Worst Enemy
After reading the above you would probably think there is nothing wrong with having a dispenser and why could it be your worst enemy?
Simple – disease, germs, and toxins.
You see an unclean dispenser can be the harvesting point for many water borne diseases and illnesses that are often put down to food poisoning. This is because we overlook the fact that water could be contaminated – I mean, it’s supposed to be filtered right?
Although the filtered water you just loaded into the machine may be perfectly clean as well as the bottle itself, the dispenser itself might be carrying all sorts of undesirables like; metals, fecal coliform, microscopic organisms such as viruses and bacteria, mosquito larvae, ants, and a host of other nasty things.
You see water dispensers attract insects like flies, ants, mosquitos, cockroaches and even mice and rats (we have found dead mice and rats in dispensers we have had in our shop for cleaning). Often there will be a buildup of mold in the cradle of the dispenser, and this can go into the pipes and hoses of the system. Oftentimes this affects the taste of the water.
Bottom line: if you dispenser is not kept clean inside and out you may be doing more harm than good when drinking water. It is imperative that you keep your dispenser clean, and we recommend a full flush every 6 months but certainly every year as a minimum.
In summary your water dispenser is a great thing for you and your family provided you keep it clean.
We recommend you physically inspect the dispenser cradle every time you change a bottle and wipe out the inside with a clean cloth (no detergent) at least monthly. This will help keep the mold at bay.
